Basically, an over-sized T bone, the porterhouse is a thicker cut, and has a larger portion of the tenderloin.
If you removed the bone from the porterhouse, you would have two steaks, the New York or strip steak, and the tenderloin or filet.
This is a perfect steak for the grill, or sautéing, season with salt and pepper, and let temper (come to room temperature) for 30 minutes before cooking. Either cook on the grill, or sauté over medium heat for 3-5 minutes per side.
